At the time of writing,  currently the following UK banks fully support Apple Pay:

  • American Express
  • first direct
  • HSBC
  • NatWest
  • Nationwide
  • MBNA
  • Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Santander
  • Ulster Bank

With the following banks coming soon (probably Autumn 2015):

I mainly bank with Lloyds but as they’re not available as yet, I thought I would try my lesser used Santander 123 Card.

Setup is very easy, Open the Passbook app (on iOS 8.3+) and either manually type details into the app or take a photo of your card (for the extra lazy or inaccurate) and your iPhone will read some of the information of the card. Doesn’t matter which way you do it.

You then accept Santander’s agreement (nice long Sunday afternoon read) and this is where I had a problem. I received a text message saying

We’ve not been able to complete your Apple Pay registration on your iPhone for your card ending xxxx. Please call us on on 0800 068 6698 to check your card.

Having called that number I was quickly put through to a nice man who told me that since I haven’t use my card for transactions in shops in a very long time, they and Apple Pay just needed to verify I still had the card and also confirm my mobile phone number. A few checks later I was asked the easiest way to fix the problem is to get some cash out at an ATM or buy something using the card in a shop and will help ‘revitalise’ the card. My words, not theirs.

Off I popped to the ATM, came back home, went through the setup again which progressed the setup further. I received a further text message asking me to enter the verification number into Passbook and job done! My card is now ready to use.

Where can I use Apple Pay in the UK?

You can also use your iPhone 6, iphone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 to buy in shops and In App purchases and the rare Apple Watch can of course be used in shops but not for In App Purchases.

How do I use Apple Pay?

Apple Pay symbols at checkoutAll you have to do is hover your phone over the contact less payment machine just look out for the Apple Pay logos to be on the safe side. Your phone doesn’t have to come out of standby, you don’t have to open Passbook, it all happens seamlessly and of courset will require you to authorise the purchase as expected by either using TouchID or the PIN on your phone.
